This timeline records significant cyber incidents since 2006. We focus on cyber attacks on government agencies, defense and high tech companies, or economic crimes with losses of more than a million dollars.
January 2025: Suspected Russian hackers executed spearphishing attacks against Kazakhdiplomatic entities. Attackers imbedded malicious code within diplomatic documents, includingone allegedly outlining an agreement between Germany and several Central Asian countries, forcyber espionage purposes.
January 2025: A pro-Russian hacking group claimed responsibility for a cyberattack targetingItalian government websites, including ministries, public services, and transportation platformsin cities like Rome and Palermo. The attack was reportedly a response to Italian Prime MinisterGiorgia Meloni's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where she reiteratedsupport for Ukraine.
January 2025: Russian cyberattacks on Ukraine surged by nearly 70% in 2024, with 4,315incidents targeting critical infrastructure, including government services, the energy sector, anddefense-related entities. Ukraine’s cybersecurity agency reported that attackers aimed to stealsensitive data and disrupt operations, with tactics such as malware distribution, phishing, andaccount compromises.
January 2025: Cyberattacks on Taiwan by Chinese groups doubled to 2.4 million daily attemptsin 2024, primarily targeting government systems and telecommunications firms, according toTaiwan's National Security Bureau. Attackers aimed to steal sensitive data and disrupt criticalinfrastructure, with successful attacks rising by 20% compared to 2023.
